American Wooden Flutes

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006 by T Mike Samoriga

The traditional American Native wooden flutes produce the most soothing and peaceful voice a woodwind can give. Hand carved from cedar, spruce, redwood, walnut, birch, red cedar, and more, you will find the end of most of these has a woodblock carved as a bear, eagle, horse, bird; or your own animal spirit can even be carved for you to order. Using stone inlays, wood carving, feathers and more, the modern flutemaker will strive to provide you the instrument of your dreams. This timeless piece of our history and tradition is now easily available for you to enjoy and participate in. There are websites to buy pre-carved flutes, webrings to advertise and share the music, and commercial recordings and concerts make it easier to find and enjoy this traditional music. Still considered to be healing, spiritually up-lifting & meditative, many of these songs have been shared and passed down thru generations.

Many of the flutemakers belong to groups that play regulary and get together with other artists and players. This is your own chance to learn from the carvers and musicians how to use this wonderfull tool.

Teen Idols

Monday, February 13th, 2006 by Sherri Granato

Everyone has had a heart throb or idol, and our teen years were filled with posters lining our bedroom walls, rushing to get a new album, cassette or cd, depending on your era. Your parents thought that you were bonafide nuts, as if they never idolized anyone. I remember drooling over Leif Garrett, David & Shaun Cassidy, The BeeGee’s, in their tight white polyester pants, and John Travolta became a favorite after watching Grease a 100+ times. I lived for the moment that one of them would appear on t.v., and show their perfect teeth that come from cosmetic dentistry and hair. Makeup & soft lights can and does do wonders for cosmetic flaws. None of the boys that I went to school with ever exhuberated that kind of persona. They were our role models of what real teenage life should be, and often you would wish that you could be a part of the Partridge Family or Brady Bunch. Nobody that I knew had a life like that. There are so many teen idols from the 50’s to the present.

Some favorites over time have been Davey Jones, Bobby Sherman, Gregg Brady, Rick Springfield, Andy Gibb, Matt Dillon, Don Johnson, Rob Lowe, Scott Baio, Zachery Ty Bryan, Elvis and for the guys, I’m sure that Olivia Newton John did wonders for raging hormones, as well as Heather Locklear, Brenda Lee, Marcia Brady, Lori Partridge, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, Melissa Sue Anderson, Melissa Gilbert, and of course Brittany Spears. People will always idolize others so called charmed lives, but in reality, other then their wealth and fame they are just normal people that we just can’t help but adore.
