Car Buying Tips

Saturday, December 1st, 2007 by Candice Cook

When it comes to buying a car, the main word is RESEARCH. You have a world of information at your fingertips. Read, read, read! Go to the manufacturers’ websites and check out all of the cars you’re interested. Read reviews in auto magazines. Most of all, read the reviews written by regular people. They are very helpful in how you may or may not like a car.

Decide what kind of car you’d like as compared to the conditions you’re going to drive the car in, as well as the amount you’d like to spend. For example, if you are going over a lot of rough terrain (mountains, steep hills, etc.) with pretty bad weather conditions (such as winters in Alaska) and you’re a grad student, you obviously can’t get your dream BMW Z3 2.3 convertible that you fantasize about. A Forerunner would be nice, but it looks as though you are heading in the direction of a Tracker.

Be sure to take test drives. You may like the ride in the passenger seat of your friend’s car, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll like the way it handles as you drive it. You may be too high up. The wheel might not be right. There are a lot of factors that can be determined in a test drive. Don’t EVER buy a car without test driving it first (Car Hire Europe).

Hybrid Cars

Sunday, June 10th, 2007 by Sherri Granato

With gasoline prices being astronomically out of control, consumers are turning to other forms of transportation. Most of society works away from the home so the need for a vehicle for commuting is a priority. Larger cars and SUV’s are being replaced with smaller, more economical vehicles and now the auto industry has the technology to go even further with saving consumers big money. The hybrid is reasonably priced when compared to other vehicles. They combine the best features of the internal combustion engine with an electric motor and can significantly improve fuel economy without sacrificing performance or driving range. Hybrids are the ultimate alternative fuel vehicles because their energy comes from the source fuels used to generate electricity. Hybrids are primarily propelled by an internal combustion engine, just like conventional vehicles. However, they also convert energy normally wasted during coasting and braking into electricity, which is stored in a battery until needed by the electric motor. The electric motor is used to assist the engine when accelerating or hill climbing and in low-speed driving conditions where internal combustion engines are least efficient. Some hybrids automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restart it when the accelerator is pressed. This prevents wasted energy from idling. Unlike all electric vehicles, some hybrids on the market do not need to be plugged into an external source of electricity to be recharged. There are now many types of hybrids available, including SUV’s.

Neighborhood Electric Vehicle - NEV

Tuesday, May 2nd, 2006 by T Mike Samoriga

Have to make a quick trip to pick up milk, mail a letter, or return a DVD? The NEV, or Neighborhood Electric Vehicle, is a small environmentally-friendly vehicle. A new “plug and go” solution, NEVs are lightweight and enclosed against inclimate weather. This ideal alternative accelerates up to a 25mph speed, perfect for those daily rides around town. Beware, however. The batteries are heavy and expensive, and the cars don’t drive far enough between recharges to make them a long-distance commuter’s choice. However, for commuting longer distances, many models do include the built-in charger to plug in and recharge upon reaching destination. The driver can then start again, fresh with a full battery to return home. The NEV industry is still new and growing; accordingly, it is still difficult to locate a dealer. But, while conserving energy, a driver can also conserve cash! For those considering purchase, there are rebates available for the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle. Safe and legally allowed on streets posted at 25mph, (do check local restrictions), cruising down the road in one of these new vhicles is sure to turn more than a few pedestrian heads.

Driving Tips

Sunday, February 19th, 2006 by Bill Tusan

Often driving tips vary depending on who you ask. When there are cold frosty mornings the right answer needs to be known immediately to prevent car damage.

Although many believe they should get their engine warmed up by racing (racing games) it in the morning the problem is that an idling engine can’t get lubrication to the necessary metal parts and without lubrication those parts wear out prematurely. Idle that car for not more than 30 seconds and save wear and tear on moving parts.

Below freezing starts can damage an engine. To avoid this use a multi grade oil either 5W-30 or 10W-30. These oils are formulated to resist thickening in cold weather and this leave more oil available for lubrication.

In preparing for winter cold have the cold-cranking power of the battery checked by your mechanic which is the major reason there are cold weather stalls.

Antifreeze should not be used at full concentration because when water is added the freezing point is actually lowered. Silicates and phosphates in the antifreeze require water to keep them in a solution to do their job.

Do not under inflate your tires for more traction before traveling on slippery roads. On icy roads one needs more traction and stopping capabilities which is accomplished with inflated tires.

The most serious problem in icy conditions occurs with drivers inexperienced with snowy icy road conditions. If your car has traction control there will not be a problem. Apply the emergency brake just a few notches until it begins to grip. This will make the braking system equal on both driving wheels and will cause to turn at the same speed. But be careful in using that emergency brake because too much braking can damage it.

Skidding is a frightening problem and it is hard to know at this panicky time. The easy answer is no matter which direction the car is skidding turn the wheel in the direction you want to go.
